Engineering Manager, Observability

Forter

Forter

London, UK
Posted 6+ months ago

About the role:

Forter is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team shaping the future of Observability in the organization. The team is working on maintaining and improving a monitoring system that scales with event counts that double yearly; creating helpful OOTB alerts for services; automating monitoring and alerting tools for developers; helping engineers get closer to root causes and reducing MTTR.

These are the kinds of challenges the team tackles daily, because we believe that developer experience matters, and we are constantly looking to find better ways of doing things at Forter.

About the team:

The Observability team’s mission is to enable Forter’s engineering teams to monitor their services with minimal friction and to reduce mean-time-to-recovery for their services. In Forter, every second counts — when Forter’s services are down, it costs money for our customers and frustrates countless online shoppers.

You’ll be building an observability platform that supports hundreds of services, and thousands of VMs, doing hundreds of changes per day, that’s in use by 150 engineers across more than 20 teams, with even more growth expected in the coming years as our company scales.

If you’re wondering what this mission looks like in a more concrete, daily form, here are some examples:

  • Taking our monitoring & alerts system to the next level, from picking and buying the right tools to exposing APIs on top of them to allow developers to leverage them for their purpose.
  • Measuring and improving our cost optimization strategy, to retain logs and events for longer periods.
  • Providing debugging and tracing tools to correlate incidents with other dimensions (e.g. deployments, IO/CPU spikes in other areas, etc.)

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead a team of 3 experienced Software Engineers
  • Mentor and guide engineers on the team, helping them advance in their careers
  • Work on production critical systems, on which all developers rely for their day-to-day operations, with high availability and very large scale
  • Be able to contribute to the team’s efforts (minimal capacity to keep context and know-how) and serve part of the on-call
  • Help design, build, and maintain the core observability, monitoring, and alert infrastructure used by all of Forter’s engineering teams
  • Help manage a multi-cloud, geo-distributed, high throughput system with an SLA of 99.999% availability
  • Solve problems for fellow engineers by understanding their needs and coming up with both short-term workarounds and long-term solutions
  • Work with a team of technically sophisticated engineers who make developer experience one of their priority

What you'll need:

  • Managed 5 or more engineers for 3+ years
  • Experience writing and maintaining complex backend systems using any of the modern programming languages (i.e. Python, Java, Node.JS, Ruby)
  • Extensive experience working with public clouds (i.e. AWS) and infrastructure provisioning tools like Terraform, cloud formation, or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience managing and scaling data stores (100s TB, 100Ks/sec throughput) and pipelines
  • Experience with monitoring/logging systems (i.e. ELK, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Honeycomb, and experience with similar tools is also good) and alerting systems (Pagerduty)
  • Experience working with container orchestration platforms such as K8s, ECS, or equivalent
  • Excellent presentation skills - can talk and explain at the right level of abstraction to different audiences
  • Fluent in written and spoken English

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary and bonus plan
  • Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)
  • Private health insurance, including vision and dental coverage
  • Generous PTO policy
  • Half-day Fridays, every Friday
  • Home office stipend
